IEEE Collabratec

IEEE Collabratec is an online community that connects professionals across engineering, technology, and related industries. The platform supports networking, collaboration, content sharing, and professional growth for a highly specialized global audience.

The goal of this project was to redesign the platform’s UI and UX to improve usability, modernize the visual identity, and increase engagement—without disrupting an established user base or brand trust.

Primary challenges

The project progressed beyond concept exploration into implemented UI and UX improvements, informing live platform updates and measurable engagement gains.

Rather than jumping directly to a single visual solution, the strategy began with two parallel design systems to evaluate usability, hierarchy, and interaction patterns. Insights from both concepts informed the final implemented direction, allowing the platform to modernize without disrupting existing user behavior.

The two concepts allowed stakeholders to evaluate tradeoffs between warmth and structure, while validating usability improvements across both approaches.

Shared UX improvements

• Simplified navigation to reduce clutter and improve orientation

• Modular card-based layouts to group related information

• Clear visual hierarchy for actions, content, and system feedback

• Personalization through user photos, milestones, and status indicators

Navigation enhancements

• Prominent “MyCT” section to anchor the user’s personal workspace

• Streamlined tabbed navigation to reduce secondary menu overload

• Clear active states and visual cues to improve wayfinding

The experience was designed to feel structured and predictable—critical for a platform supporting complex professional workflows.

Two visual systems were designed to solve the same UX challenges through different stylistic lenses.

Concept 1: Rounded UI System

• Rounded UI elements to convey approachability, inclusivity, and connection

• Gradient color palette inspired by Collabratec campaign visuals

• Simplified, consistent iconography with one icon per action

• Rounded tab navigation with clear active states

• Reduced masthead height to streamline vertical flow

This concept emphasized warmth and ease, helping soften a complex interface without sacrificing clarity.

Concept 2: Square UI System

• Square UI elements to communicate structure, precision, and professionalism

• Brand-forward color palette with a more technical tone

• Color-coded icon system:

  • Green for content and platform features

  • Blue for interactive actions (like, comment, add)

• Text-based tab navigation with underlined active states

• Numbered notifications to create urgency and task awareness

This concept leaned into a more traditional, systems-driven aesthetic aligned with technical audiences.

Milestones & recognition

• Color-coded milestone badges representing years of participation

• Consistent visual treatment across both concepts

• Designed to increase engagement and reinforce professional growth

Following implementation, the redesigned IEEE Collabratec experience delivered clear improvements in usability, engagement, and visual consistency across the live platform.
