Access Youth Academy

A story-driven nonprofit website that inspires connection, trust, and impact.

  • Access Youth Academy (AYA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth through academics, athletics, and mentorship. While their mission and impact were powerful, their existing website did not emotionally reflect the depth of their story or differentiate them from similar organizations.

This project was an opportunity to reimagine the digital experience as a narrative journey—one that emotionally connects with visitors, clearly communicates impact, and leaves a lasting impression.

I served as Creative Director, leading the concept, storytelling approach, and experience vision for the redesign.

  • Nonprofit websites often feel informational but forgettable. For Access Youth Academy, the goal was to create something different:

    Key challenges

    • Stand out among similar youth and education nonprofits

    • Translate real-world impact into a compelling digital story

    • Create an emotional connection that inspires trust, support, and action

    • Balance creativity with clarity and accessibility

This project allowed space to think beyond traditional layouts and explore a more expressive, experience-led approach.

  • The core creative idea centered on movement, journey, and growth.

AYA’s logo form became a storytelling device, guiding users through the site as a visual metaphor for:

    • Direction and purpose

    • Momentum and progress

    • Helping youth “take flight”

Rather than a static browsing experience, the site was designed as a guided journey that unfolds as users scroll.

  • The layout and interactions were intentionally crafted to feel immersive and memorable, while still supporting usability.

    Experience principles

    • Story first, structure second

    • Emotion as an entry point, information as reinforcement

    • Motion and interaction used to guide—not distract

    Key design elements

    • Interactive sections that visually move users through the AYA story

    • Non-traditional layouts to break expectations and create intrigue

    • Scroll-based transitions that reinforce progression and impact

    • Strategic pacing between emotional storytelling and clear calls to action

This approach allowed users to feel AYA’s mission before reading about it.

  • The redesign leaned into a bold, expressive visual system while respecting the nonprofit’s identity.

    Visual direction

    • Strong typography and hierarchy to anchor storytelling

    • Imagery focused on real students, moments, and community

    • Purposeful motion tied directly to narrative moments

    • A cohesive palette and layout system to unify creative sections

The result was a site that felt alive, human, and hopeful, not templated or institutional.

  • This project provided space to experiment and push creative boundaries.

    What was explored

    • Multiple interactive section concepts and layout directions

    • Different storytelling rhythms and scroll behaviors

    • How far motion and metaphor could go without harming usability

The final experience reflects a balance between creative risk and strategic clarity, resulting in a site that is both engaging and functional.

  • The redesigned Access Youth Academy website became a distinctive digital presence that clearly communicates mission, impact, and heart.

    Results

    • A memorable, story-driven experience that differentiates AYA from peers

    • Stronger emotional connection with donors, families, and partners

    • Clear articulation of who Access is, what they do, and why it matters

    • A flexible foundation for future growth and storytelling
